Mondo Eatery combines the Southern Italian Cuisine that Gencarelli’s Cucina has been serving in Montclair since 2007 with a bit of a trendy focus on flavors and techniques from around the world. Together, Debbie and Nicole Gencarelli have found their customers desire a mix of traditional old world family recipes, but prefer to challenge their palate with new approaches to cooking that are simple, diverse and delicious. That input has encouraged us to change things up a bit. Mondo, (the Italian word for world) offers our traditional dishes alongside cuisine that is prepared using the most exotic flavors and cooking techniques from around the world. If you think about it, some of the very old traditional approaches to preparing and preserving food has had a rebirth in the restaurant industry and been coined new techniques in the gastronomical world. Who would have thought the toiling experience of canning il pomidoro (tomatoes) in sweltering August would interest our discriminating foodies of the twentieth century? Whether it’s our traditional Sunday Gravy or a sizzling steak cooked to perfection utilizing the Sous Vide method of cooking proteins, we want to offer you that choice. Through the practice of combining these old and new techniques in our kitchen, we have found that the key ingredients that make a good dish is really simplicity and creative curiousness. Nicole has been collaborating with Chef Jonathan Portela, who has travelled to other parts of Europe and has spent the last few months in Spain and Portugal gaining more insight to how molecular gastronomy combined with old world techniques can create a romance with our traditional staples that will make a marriage of modern world cuisine. Welcome to the Gencarelli family’s next chapter, Mondo Eatery a combination of age old traditions, flavors and techniques from around the world!
So remember, when you visit Mondo Eatery you will still get your Southern Italian food fix,a glimpse of family traditions from Calabria and be welcomed like you' re family. Be prepared to experience flavors and techniques that will heighten you dining experience. As always, we invite you to our family table that now offers diversity that encompass a world of flavors, traditions and warm hospitality. In addition to changes in our menus seasonally, we offer a great lunch menu daily, on and off site catering, and Al Fresco dining in our beautiful private patio garden in Spring and Summer. In the future we intend on offering a tasting menu of small plates and classes on some of the old and new world cooking techniques that we employ so, stay tuned. For us it’s all about sharing our food and traditions with our customers and making them feel like family.
